How do we keep our garden beautiful and alive during the summer?

Hello Gardeners!

Here are some tips and recommendations for planting and keeping our garden beautiful and alive throughout the summer months.

How often should I water in hot weather?

You don’t have to water more when the temperatures are much higher. But there are a few things you can do to keep your plants from burning out. First, continue to water every day, preferably at the end of the day, around 6 p.m., when the sun is less present. This avoids the risk of burning the foliage of the plants. If watering is done in the middle of the day, the drops of water will form a magnifying glass effect and concentrate the sun’s rays, which would damage your plants. Remember that plants in hanging pots need more water than plants in the ground.

It is advisable to use rainwater to water your plants. This type of water is excellent for plants because it is free of limescale and remains at room temperature. Do not forget to hydrate the base of the plants.

Watch out for weeds

Especially in summer, weeds tend to appear in large numbers. It is therefore important to pull these weeds as soon as you see them, because they grow very quickly.

It is also much easier to remove them when they are small, because as they grow, some of them develop huge roots and cling powerfully to the ground.

Choosing the right plants for your summer garden

Choosing the right plants will determine the success and beauty of your garden.

It is best to choose plants that do not require much shade and moisture. There are many choices of plants that require little watering, for example: verbena, cactus, geranium, lavender, agave…

In addition, to add a touch of color to your summer garden, choose varieties of plants that bloom at this time of year such as: the great daisy, the campanula, the geranium rozanne, the anthemis, the achillea …

Beware of parasites

This is, of course, something we should do all year round. However, summer is a favorite season for some pests and we need to pay special attention to them.

As with weeds, it is essential to act as soon as possible and not let the pest spread.

The summer period is very important for our garden, and we must redouble our attention, because of the heat and lack of rain.

We will share with you in a future article our tips to fight ecologically against these pests.
